The first day of a typical estate sale we bought the things we usually do; clothes, small trinkets...and two of the former resident's paintings, which had been stored in the basement since his death in 1970. We drove home and talked all night about how we should drive (four hours round trip) back and buy more. The next day we did just that, to bring you (and us) what we're calling The Georgia Basement Paintings.

About the Paintings
According to relatives, these incredible works were likely made between the 40's-60's. Having been stored in a basement since the late 60's, there is some damage to all of them. Marks, folds and the scent of storage is present in each. They are painted on canvases, old shoe boxes, paper, and bits of cardboard. All of these things make the pieces unique, historic, and above all so so special.

About the Artist: 1888-1970
Francis Livy Bailey described himself as a poet, painter, & inventor. He never sold a painting while he was alive, and didn't take his art particularly seriously. His wife claims she became interested in him "because he was the most versatile man I ever met". Mr. Bailey was raised in Virginia, loved steam engines, old mills, & collecting everything.
